It's a rather heavy-handed parable about Nazism and racial purity, which has been building through these last books and films in the hands of director David Yates: though I must say I thought the sequences where the trio infiltrate the Ministry were executed very stylishly. The Dark Lord's disciples now control both the old school, Hogwarts, and worse, the Ministry of Magic: Harry and his friends are in hiding as the Ministry executes a kind of pogrom against Muggles. Harry, Ron and Hermione are very grown-up young adults now, and we can say goodbye to those jolly boarding school japes at Hogwarts: this is a very dark story indeed as the trio and some of their old associates battle renegade wizard Voldemort who plans to dominate their world. The makers of this lucrative British franchise have now split JK Rowling's final book, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows into two parts, and this is part one.
